Not quite the perfect end to the year, there was a slight let up in the cold weather over Christmas but I didn’t quite manage to get the trap out - can’t think what it was that distracted me…
Ta - dah!!!. Up and running agian - what a relief.
Snow, followed by sleety rain, clearing, -1°C, light breeze.
Ever the optimist, I figured that, in spite of the snow, the cloud cover might keep the temperature sufficiently high for a bit of moth activity. This morning I had difficulty even opening the trap as it was covered in a film of ice and all the components were frozen together - did catch something though!
Geometridae
Very frosty and clear (on Wednesday, the temperature in the garden at 07:45 was -7°C).
Damp at first, clearing, -2°C by dawn, still.
Well, at least it wasn’t a complete no-show.
Geometridae
Too cold, wet and miserable.
Mainly clear, 2°C, light wind.
Just because it wasn’t raining didn&rssquo;t mean that putting the trap out was a good idea.
Sallow Button - Acleris hastiana
Overcast at first, clearing, light wind, 9°C under cloud, falling to 4°C.
An entirely dry night, in spite of rain being forecast. I grabbed the opportunity knowing that the outlook for the next few nights is clear and frosty. Glad I did, if only for the particularly attractively marked Sallow Button (above).
Tortricidae
Lasiocampidae
Geometridae
Noctuidae
Bit of rain, makes a change and the garden could probably do with it too.
Mottled Umber - Erannis defoliaria v2.0
Mainly overcast, showery, fairly windy, 7°C by dawn.
At last! A let up in the rain, well actually, it stopped raining for a brief period in the early evening, long enough for me to get the trap out and get it going without electrocuting myself.
Blastobasidae
Tortricidae
Lasiocampidae
Geometridae
Ooooh, what a surprise… more rain! Apparently, November was the single wettest month on record for the UK as a whole - can’t say that I’m in any way surprised by that.
