Number of species:
This month: 12
Off to Devon for the weekend.
Gem - Orthonama obstipata
Partly cloudy and foggy, 10°C, still.
If there has to be only four moths in the trap it’s pleasing that one should be something we’ve not seen before: a Gem. I was pretty sure that one of the Yellow-line Quakers was a Brick at first, but closer examination proved otherwise, ho - hum.
Geometridae
Noctuidae
No trap.
Sprawler - Brachionycha sphinx
Clear at first with showers later, 10°C, still.
Twelve species, including the year’s first Sprawler, more than we’ve seen for some time.
Geometridae
Noctuidae
No trap.
November Moth Agg. Epirrita Sp.
White-point - Mythimna albipuncta
Yellow-line Quaker - Agrochola macilenta
Large Wainscot - Rhizedra lutosa
Partly cloudy, 10°C, windy.
Well, not only the first Epirrita Sp., White-point and Yellow-line Quaker of the year but two, yes two, Large Wainscot, a species I have expected to see before, the river being a seemingly ideal habitat, but up until now it hasn’t shown itself - maybe it’s the pond?.
Geometridae
Noctuidae
No trap.
Cloudy and wet at first, clearing and becomming misty, 5°C, light wind.
I think the most exciting thing in the trap this morning was the , our latest record for this species.
Geometridae
Noctuidae
Variable Smudge - Ypsolopha ustella
Mainly cloudy, showers, 8°C, light wind.
Not too bad, but nothing very exciting to report. I’ve put the photo of the Variable Smudge up even though it’s not the first we’ve seen this year but it is very different to the ones we caught in September and back in March.
Yponomeutidae
Tortricidae
Geometridae
Noctuidae
Pretty poor weather throughout.
Cloudy, 10°C, still.
Really would have expected a bit more than this, it seemed like it was going to be a fairly good night.
Tortricidae
Noctuidae
Red-green Carpet - Chloroclysta siterata
Feathered Thorn - Colotois pennaria
Cloudy at first, clearing, 3°C, light wind.
Ah, that’s better, a couple of good moths too, rgc and ft topping the bill, the first Chest since April too.
Geometridae
Noctuidae
No trap.
Clear, 1°C, still.
Hmmm…
Noctuidae
No trap.
Clear at first, cloudy with light rain later, 6°C, light wind.
No great shakes, better than Friday though.
Tortricidae
Geometridae
Noctuidae
No trap.
Pink-barred Sallow - Xanthia togata
Clear and cool at first, becoming cloudy, temperature rising to 7°C by dawn, still.
A mere three moths but at least a pink BS was one of them.
Noctuidae
No trap.
Narrow-winged Grey - Eudonia angustea
Lesser Yellow Underwing - Noctua comes
Black Rustic - Aporophyla nigra
Blair’s Shoulder-knot - Lithophane leautieri
Cloudy with showers, windy, very warm 16°C.
A bit busier than of late with the first Narrow-winged Grey, Black Rustic and Blair’s Shoulder-knot of the year. We also had a rather interestingly marked Lesser Yellow Underwing which I thought was worth a photograph.
Tortricidae
Crambidae
Pyralidae
Geometridae
Lymantriidae
Noctuidae
No trap.
Cloudy, becoming wet, 11°C, light wind.
Not very much at all in the trap this morning.
Geometridae
Noctuidae
No trap.
Large Ranunculus - Polymixis flavicincta
Red-line Quaker - Agrochola lota
Cloudy, showers, 11°C, increasingly windy.
Another smallish catch embellished with the season’s first Large Ran (two, in fact) and RLQ.
Tortricidae
Geometridae
Noctuidae
No trap.
Merveille du Jour - Dichonia aprilina
Sallow - Xanthia icteritia
Mainly cloudy, 11°C, still.
Not too much to shout about but the first Merveille du Jour and Sallow make things all more than worthwhile.
