Friday 30 & Saturday 31 October 2009

Off to Devon for the weekend.

Thursday 29 October 2009

Orthonama obstipata

Gem - Orthonama obstipata

Partly cloudy and foggy, 10°C, still.

If there has to be only four moths in the trap it’s pleasing that one should be something we’ve not seen before: a Gem. I was pretty sure that one of the Yellow-line Quakers was a Brick at first, but closer examination proved otherwise, ho - hum.

No trap.

Tuesday 27 October 2009

Brachionycha sphinx

Sprawler - Brachionycha sphinx

Twelve species, including the year’s first Sprawler, more than we’ve seen for some time.

Epirrita Sp. Mythimna albipuncta

November Moth Agg. Epirrita Sp.

White-point - Mythimna albipuncta

Agrochola macilenta Rhizedra lutosa

Yellow-line Quaker - Agrochola macilenta

Large Wainscot - Rhizedra lutosa

Partly cloudy, 10°C, windy.

Well, not only the first Epirrita Sp., White-point and Yellow-line Quaker of the year but two, yes two, Large Wainscot, a species I have expected to see before, the river being a seemingly ideal habitat, but up until now it hasn’t shown itself - maybe it’s the pond?.

I think the most exciting thing in the trap this morning was the , our latest record for this species.

Ypsolopha ustella

Variable Smudge - Ypsolopha ustella

Mainly cloudy, showers, 8°C, light wind.

Not too bad, but nothing very exciting to report. I’ve put the photo of the Variable Smudge up even though it’s not the first we’ve seen this year but it is very different to the ones we caught in September and back in March.

Pink-barred Sallow - Xanthia togata

Aporophyla nigra Lithophane leautieri

Cloudy with showers, windy, very warm 16°C.

A bit busier than of late with the first Narrow-winged Grey, Black Rustic and Blair’s Shoulder-knot of the year. We also had a rather interestingly marked Lesser Yellow Underwing which I thought was worth a photograph.
